What Is SEO and How Does It Work? A Beginner’s Guide for Indian Business Owners

By MarketingFanda Team  Â·  June 14, 2026

If you’ve been running a business for any amount of time, you’ve heard the term “SEO” thrown around. Someone in a meeting said it. An agency emailed you about it. A competitor mentioned they’re investing in it.

And maybe you’ve nodded along while secretly wondering: what does it actually mean?

This is the guide that explains it without the jargon.

What SEO Stands For and What It Means in Practice

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. The name says most of it — it’s the work of making your website better so that search engines (mainly Google) rank it higher when people search for things related to your business.

Here’s the simplest version: when someone types “digital marketing agency in Noida” into Google, the results that appear are ranked in a specific order. Google decides that order based on hundreds of factors. SEO is the process of improving those factors for your website so you rank higher than your competitors.

The higher you rank, the more clicks you get. The more clicks, the more potential customers arrive at your site without you paying for each one.

Why Google Is the Only Search Engine That Matters in India

India has a few search engines technically available, but in practice: over 96% of searches in India happen on Google. Bing, Yahoo, and the others are background noise.

So when we say SEO, we mostly mean: how does Google decide which websites to show?

How Google Decides Who Ranks

Google uses automated programs called crawlers (sometimes called spiders or bots) to scan the internet constantly. They visit websites, read the content, follow links to other pages, and report back what they find.

Based on what the crawlers find, Google builds an index — essentially a giant database of websites and their content. When someone types a search query, Google’s algorithm searches this index and ranks results based on how well each matches what the person is looking for.

The ranking factors can be grouped into three main categories:

Relevance. Does your content actually match what the person searched for? This is why having the right keywords — the phrases people use to search for your type of business — on your website matters. If you run a tax consultancy in Noida and your website never mentions “tax consultancy in Noida,” Google has no strong reason to show you for that search.

Authority. Does Google trust your website? Authority is largely built through backlinks — other websites linking to yours. A link from a trusted website to yours is essentially a vote of confidence. More quality links generally mean more authority and higher rankings. This is why getting your business listed in reputable directories, getting coverage in local publications, or being mentioned on industry blogs helps SEO.

Experience. This is the newer category that covers how people actually experience your website. Is it fast? Does it work on mobile? Is it easy to navigate? Google tracks signals like how quickly people leave your site (bounce rate) and how long they stay, and factors them into rankings.

The Three Types of SEO You’ll Hear About

On-page SEO refers to everything you do on your own website: the content you write, the keywords you use, how you structure your pages with headings, how you describe your images (alt text), the titles you give each page (meta titles), and the short descriptions that appear in search results (meta descriptions).

Off-page SEO refers to everything that happens away from your website that affects your rankings — primarily, building backlinks from other sites. Getting your business listed in local directories, earning press mentions, and creating content that others want to share and link to are common off-page strategies.

Technical SEO covers the behind-the-scenes stuff: how fast your site loads, whether it works properly on mobile, whether it has an SSL certificate (the “https” in your URL), whether search engines can crawl and index it without hitting errors. Technical SEO is less visible but often the difference between a website that ranks and one that doesn’t, even with good content.

How Long Does SEO Take to Work?

This is the question every business owner asks, and the honest answer is: it depends, but you should expect three to six months before seeing meaningful organic traffic from SEO efforts.

Unlike paid advertising, which puts you at the top of results immediately (but stops the moment you stop paying), SEO builds over time. You’re essentially earning your position by demonstrating relevance, authority, and quality. That takes time.

The flip side: once you’ve earned good rankings, they tend to stay for a while with maintenance. SEO done well today pays dividends for years. A blog post that ranks for a valuable search term will bring in traffic every single month without ongoing cost.

What SEO Actually Costs

You can do basic SEO yourself — it takes learning but it’s not impossible. Tools like Google Search Console (free), Google Analytics (free), and Ubersuggest or SEMrush (paid but with free tiers) give you the data you need.

Hiring an agency to manage SEO professionally in India typically runs from Rs 15,000 to Rs 60,000 per month depending on the scope, the competition in your industry, and the agency’s track record.

The return on that investment comes from organic traffic that doesn’t have a per-click cost attached to it. For businesses where each new customer is worth significant revenue, SEO ROI is usually much better than paid ads over a 12-month horizon.

The Mistake That Undermines Most DIY SEO Efforts

Focusing on rankings for rankings’ sake.

A small business in Noida ranking on page one for “digital marketing” is a nice achievement. But “digital marketing” is searched by students, job seekers, and researchers — not just business owners looking to hire an agency. The keyword that actually drives business might be “digital marketing agency Noida” or “hire digital marketing expert Noida.”

SEO works when you rank for searches made by people who actually want to buy what you sell. Identifying those searches — the specific words and phrases your customers use when they’re ready to buy — is the starting point of any strategy worth investing in.

Marketing Fanda runs SEO strategies built around business outcomes. The question isn’t just “what can we rank for?” It’s “what rankings will actually bring us paying customers?”

SEO isn’t magic and it isn’t quick. But for businesses that invest in it patiently and properly, it builds a stream of organic traffic that keeps working long after the initial effort.
