Your Website Is Either Making You Money or Costing You Money — There’s No Middle Ground

At some point in the last five years, almost every business owner has said some version of “we need to update our website.” And then most of them either didn’t, or updated it in the way you’d rearrange furniture — moved things around without solving the actual problem.

The problem with most business websites in India isn’t aesthetics. It’s function. They look like websites, but they don’t work like businesses.

The Question Your Website Should Be Answering in 5 Seconds

When someone lands on your website, they have one question: “Is this for me?”

If the answer isn’t obvious in five seconds, they leave. On mobile in India, with spotty connectivity and dozens of browser tabs already open, five seconds is generous.

Your homepage needs to communicate:

  • What you do
  • Who you do it for
  • Why you’re different
  • What they should do next

If a stranger can’t read your homepage and answer those four questions without scrolling or clicking, your website has a clarity problem. No amount of design upgrades fixes a clarity problem. That’s a thinking problem.

Speed: The Issue Hiding in Plain Sight

Google made site speed a ranking factor in 2021 for mobile searches. They called it Core Web Vitals. Most Indian business websites fail it comfortably.

Here’s why this matters beyond rankings: every additional second of load time costs you conversions. Industry studies across markets have consistently shown that a page taking three seconds to load converts worse than one loading in one second — often significantly worse. On mobile, with 4G connections and smaller devices, the effect is even more pronounced.

What causes slow websites:

Uncompressed images. A business website where each image is 3-5MB because someone uploaded directly from a DSLR or an iPhone is extremely common. One image that size would be fine on a desktop with broadband. Four of them on a mobile page is a problem.

Too many plugins. WordPress sites with 25 active plugins run like a very tired old computer. Every plugin adds code that has to load. Many plugins are either unnecessary or have lighter alternatives.

Bad hosting. Cheap shared hosting that costs Rs 99/month sounds like a deal until you realize your website loads in eight seconds. Upgrade.

No caching. Caching means your website stores certain elements so repeat visitors don’t have to download them from scratch every time. Basic caching setup takes an hour and makes a measurable difference.

Mobile Design Is Not Optional

Over 80% of website traffic in India comes from mobile devices. If your website was designed for desktop and “also works on mobile,” you’re losing people.

Mobile-first design means designing for the smallest screen first, then scaling up. It means buttons that are large enough to tap without pinching, text that’s readable without zooming, and forms that don’t require a stylus to fill out.

A few specific things to check on mobile right now:

Is your phone number clickable? It should be — tap to call is a basic feature that many websites still don’t have.

Is your CTA (call to action) visible without scrolling? On mobile, if the button is below the fold, most users won’t find it.

Does your contact form work with autofill? Forcing mobile users to type their full name and email address from scratch increases abandonment.

What a High-Converting Business Website Actually Looks Like

Beyond speed and mobile experience, the websites that generate leads and sales tend to share a few characteristics.

Specific, concrete headlines. “We help e-commerce brands in India increase revenue with performance marketing” converts better than “Your Digital Growth Partner.” Specificity creates relevance. Relevance keeps people reading.

Social proof that’s real. Client logos, case studies with actual numbers, video testimonials, press mentions — these build trust fast. Vague quotes from “Happy Customer” don’t.

Clear calls to action. Every page on your website should have one clear action you want the visitor to take. Contact us. Book a call. Download this guide. Request a quote. Don’t make them decide — tell them what to do next.

Simple navigation. A navigation menu with eight items is a navigation menu that doesn’t help anyone find anything. Simplify. Most business websites need a homepage, an about page, a services page (or individual service pages), and a contact page. That’s it.

Lead capture beyond “contact us.” A contact form is passive — it asks people who are already ready to reach out. A lead magnet — a free checklist, a guide, an audit offer — captures people who are interested but not quite ready. This builds a pipeline instead of waiting for ready-buyers.

The Redesign Mistake That Wastes Money

Every few years a business decides to redesign their website. They pick a new template, update the colors, write new copy, and launch.

Three months later, organic traffic has dropped because the redesign didn’t account for URL structure or redirects. The new contact form has a bug that nobody noticed. The mobile experience is actually worse than before because the developer prioritized desktop.

Website redesigns go wrong when they’re treated as creative projects instead of business projects. The goals — lead generation, appointment booking, product sales, whatever matters to this specific business — should drive every decision.

A good web development agency asks uncomfortable questions upfront. What’s the current conversion rate? Why do people leave the site without converting? What does the customer need to believe before they’ll buy? What’s the single most important action we want a visitor to take?

What It Costs and What It’s Worth

A decent business website in India starts around Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000 for a simple, well-built site. A more complex site with e-commerce, custom functionality, or significant content runs higher.

That cost, spread over three to five years of use, is a few thousand rupees a month. If your website generates even two or three additional leads a month, it pays for itself. If it’s generating nothing, the problem isn’t the cost — it’s that the website isn’t working.

Marketing Fanda builds websites that are designed to convert, not just to look good. Speed, clarity, mobile experience, and lead capture are built in from the start, not tacked on as afterthoughts.

Your website is working for you or against you, 24 hours a day. It’s worth figuring out which.
